Aw gee, Hannah, you’re too kind.

Sunitha, I’m so glad you resurrected this post and reminded me of Hannah’s wisdom about today’s job search.

Many thanks to both of you!

Hi Sunitha,

Thanks for your insightful comment and very kind words.

This new reality of careers and lack of the kind of job security we had been used to truly requires mindful and purposeful planning, as you say.

I love your cautionary advice to “pause, reflect, and act”. In my practice, I won’t work with executive job seekers who can’t (or won’t) take the time to collaborate with me on their personal branding, which helps them get a grip on what kinds of jobs and companies will satisfy their overall career needs . . . leading them to financial AND emotional career fulfillment.

Knowing what kind of work (and which kinds of companies or organizations) will be a good fit is the critical first step too many job seekers push past quickly when they dive into a job search.

Your thoughts bring to mind that wonderful old saying: “Find a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.

Thanks again!

Years of socialization, I believe, has led to the belief–one job-stability-retirement. I remember conversations, growing up in India where getting a “secure” job was considered a goal and a hallmark of success. The word security today, is volatile because it doesn’t exist in the way we understood it.

The reality is that in a lifetime, we will not touch the surface of our skills/talents UNLESS we pay attention and do so in a purposeful, mindful fashion. My thought is that as a society we do need to slow down, reflect on how we want to live our lives and pass unconventional wisdom to our children/next generation. Meg, you make a point about Hannah slowly yet surely building a brand – this concept of pause, reflect, act is missing because of the immediate gratification syndrome.

So, the question isn’t about getting a job or even finding a career, is it? It is more about digging deeper to understand what makes you engaged and productive in a way that you are surprised that a whole day went by when you finally looked up to take a breather.

I am glad there is a community of thinkers like you who are vigilant and bring these topics to an awareness to generate discussions.

Thanks,
Sunitha

It is an honor and a pleasure to be considered a colleague! Your site has long been one I’ve referred to and shared not only for cutting-edge but SOLID advice!

Many many thanks for featuring me!

This concept of multiple income streams makes for an interesting discussion. I hope we can continue to explore the logistics of how this will work across the executive and C-suite!
