Debra, thank you for sharing this very important advice! And I’ll add another piece. One of the reasons I don’t have many more LinkedIn recommendations is because I don’t want to “out” my clients by having them associated with me through a recommendation. If people see that they have written a recommendation for someone who has written their LinkedIn profile, resume, etc., a red flag is likely to go up.

There is one caution that I would add to supplement your advice, recommendations are often very persuasive and convert doubters into contacts. How would you recommend that a stealth job seeker protect their privacy while at the same time not jeopardize their value to a prospective employer who is screening your client’s background on LinkedIn.? One of my suggestions is to be very selective about which recommendations remain and to delete ones that are least relevant to the current job target and eliminate specific recommendations where the content or author could raise suspicion. At the same time, to make the recommendation section a strong selling point, ask for recommendations from those you trust and boost the number of recommendations with content directly related to and supporting the target opportunity.
