Thank you for commenting, Jacqui. I agree. Connecting on a personal level when networking usually has a more powerful and positive impact than sticking to “business” talk only.

I especially liked the idea of asking the other person (in a networking situation) “anything that allows for them to light up a bit and connect as humans, not as talking business cards.”

Powerful.

Hi Jacob,

Thank you for taking the time to comment and share such insightful advice.

I agree with you. Concentrate on one networking outlet, such as LinkedIn, but supplement when you can with one other platform. Trying to manage too many platforms, and do it well, will probably require more time than most job seekers can invest.

Thanks again!
Meg

You can’t know who in your network will lead you to your next job, and then just focus on them. Similarly, being overly strategic in your networking can come across as cold and unauthentic. But you do need to do something, because as you mention, most jobs are found through a connection and you really need to build your network before you need it.

So keep it simple. Non-job seekers should have at least one industry related place that they follow and participate in regularly, and a few others that are occasional. Then, when a job search is on the horizon, start ramping up your activity.
